Kate Gosselin Wanted Fame – Name Now Catchphrase for Parenting Tactics

Kate Gosselin became famous overnight for a few things. She first graced the screen back in 2007 in Jon & Kate Plus 8. From there it was Kate Plus 8 after her split with husband Jon Gosselin.

With the two shows combined, Kate managed to keep her children on television for more than a decade.

While her series ended in 2017, she still appeared in specials. Kate even appeared in a dating show utilizing her famous name. People haven’t forgotten this mom or the behaviors she became noted for.

Jon & Kate Plus 8: Kate Gosselin First Dubbed Super Mom

Kate Gosselin made her debut with Jon & Kate Plus 8 many moons ago. But instead of a super mom, which viewers expected, she became famous for something else. Her fame on the reality scene came from her controversial parenting skills.

Her first series was like a window into this couple navigating daily life with eight kids. This included the famous Gosselin sextuplets and their older twin girls. But soon she became the modern-day Mommie Dearest. This is the title of a movie created from a book that Joan Crawford’s daughter wrote.

Kate Gosselin - Mommie Dearest

Back when she first hit the screen, it seems that Kate Gosselin’s behavior took on a life of its own. She demonstrated a short fuse. So, people tuned in to see what she’d do next.

The mom of eight entertained the masses over the years by appearing in several reality shows. Her behavior became the talk of the social media world. It also kept the viewers coming back.

Mom Becomes Kate Plus 8 after Split from Jon Gosselin

This now famous TV mom made a name for herself with her antics on and off the screen. Her fame started when she became a mom of sextuplets. These six kids became little brothers and sisters to the Gosselin twins, Mady and Cara.

The twins were born in 2000. Then four years later in 2004, she gave birth to the sextuplets.  Alexis, Collin, Hannah, Aaden, Leah, and Joel Gosselin became six very famous kids.

Kate wanted the fame and Jon did not. He wanted his children to have a normal childhood. Kate and Jon Gosselin divorced after years of bickering over having their lives play out on TV.

So, without Jon, the reality series became Kate Plus 8. That’s when the cameras filmed the everyday life of Kate Gosselin with all the kids.

Name Becomes Catchphrase

For more than a decade, Kate Gosselin was a household name. But soon people started to use her name along with a catchphrase for a type of parenting.

Using this mom’s name to describe a parenting style usually isn’t flattering. It’s not used to highlight good parenting skills. No, it’s more like the opposite. She became a symbol for behavior that was more negative than positive.

The “Mommy Dearest” catchphrase is often used alongside “Kate Gosselin” today.  Most people using the phrase actually misspell it. It comes from the book Mommie Dearest about real life actress Joan Crawford.

Kate Gosselin: Kate Gosselin Mommy Dearest Comments

To be fair, Kate Gosselin doesn’t seem like Joan Crawford as described in Mommie Dearest. In the book and film, Crawford would beat her daughter with wire coat hangers, because she preferred crocheted hangers.  She would deprive her daughter of food for days at a time. She even strapped one child into his bed every night.

Even morning news shows are joining in and trolling Kate. The Today Show called Molly Shannon’s character on HBO’s show, The Other Two, as a “sort of Kate Gosselin type” mom.  Then added, but “much more loveable and weird.” It looks as though “Kate Gosselin” is the modern-day “Mommy Dearest” to some.
