‘When Calls The Heart’: Henry and Christopher Make Amends

When Calls The Heart oilman Henry Gowen (Martin Cummins) and his estranged son Christopher Hughes (James Drew Dean) find a way to make up for their past troubles. Over the last few episodes of the Hallmark show, Christopher learned much about his father he didn’t previously know.  The father-son duo mends their rift before one of them leaves Hope Valley.

When Calls The Heart: Henry Gowen & Christopher Hughes at Odds to Start

When Calls The Heart scoundrel Christopher Hughes had a change of heart after seeing his father Henry Gowen fall ill. Henry has been estranged from Christopher for some time, it appears. Since he arrived in town, Christopher has discovered a lot about his father. The two were barely civil to each other at first.

When Christopher Hughes first arrived in Hope Valley, he attempted to sit down to supper with his father in the Cafe, but Henry told him to go back where he came from. Later, on When Calls The Heart,  Christopher went to the oil rig to confront Henry Gowen. He was surprised to learn his father doesn’t own the company, even though the Gowen name is still on it. He mockingly asked how his father felt losing something so precious.

Henry answered, but his words seemed fraught with hidden meaning. Henry told Christopher Hughes life was short and fragile. He’d never be able to make right all the things he’d broken. Crushing something so beautiful with so much potential is something he’d carry with him forever. Christopher clenched his jaw and refused to shake Henry Gowen’s hand as he walked away on When Calls The Heart.

WCTH: Christopher Has a Change of Heart

Christopher Hughes arrived in Hope Valley, and one of the first things he did was steal Lee Coulter’s (Kavan Smith) watch when they bumped into each other in the street. Shortly after that, Christopher Hughes hid his face from When Calls The Heart’s Henry Gowen as they passed on the boardwalk. Later, when confronted about the watch, he denied knowing anything about it. However, as soon as he was alone, Christopher Hughes took it out of his pocket to admire it.

A young lady, Rachel Thom (Jennifer Laporte), Lee’s niece, saw Christopher Hughes pickpocket her Uncle’s watch on WCTH. Strangely,  Rachel did not tell Lee what she saw, even after he realized it was missing, and began asking around town for it. Christopher and Rachel met and began flirting. Their relationship blossomed to the point that Rachel comforted him when Henry Gowen had a medical scare. Shortly afterward, Lee found his watch under the seat of his car on When Calls The Heart.

It appears seeing his father collapse on When Calls The Heart changed Christopher’s attitude toward him. That was the first time Henry Gowen heard his son call him anything but his given name. Henry was convinced Christopher Hughes didn’t care because he’d returned his letter. And now that he knows his boy has feelings for him, it’s the best thing that ever happened to him. When Christopher left town to go after Rachel, the two men hugged rather than shake hands.

When Calls The Heart: Henry Protects His Son

Henry Gowen of When Calls The Heart covered up for Christopher when he realized his offspring is suspected of stealing a car. Christopher Hughes drove a car when he first came to Hope Valley. But later, he hid the car in the woods, and the Mounties determined it was stolen when they found it. Henry confronted the authorities about it, accusing them of going after Christopher. Bill Avery (Jack Wagner) acknowledged it shouldn’t be a case of guilt by association due to Henry’s shady past.

Henry confronted his boy about the stolen car on Hallmark’s When Calls The Heart. He admitted to driving it but denied taking it. Christopher Hughes told his father he “borrowed” the car after his buddy no longer needed it. He told Henry Gowen he slept in it on the way to Hope Valley from Hamilton. Bill found a boot print in the car as he was investigating.

When Bill visited Henry Gowen at the oil derrick, he revealed he found a footprint in the stolen car. Henry told him Christopher Hughes had already left town, trying to connect with Rachel Thom. Henry said he’d do anything for family. After Bill left, Henry casually tossed a pair of boots into the fire barrel. Will Christopher’s bad deeds be discovered on When Calls The Heart? Or will Henry Gowen be successful in hiding his son’s past?
