I Am Jazz: Jazz Jennings Sits Down with Secretary of Education

Jazz Jennings didn’t have a good experience going to school as a transgender child. So, the I Am Jazz cast member wants to create a bill that ensures teachers and faculty get taught how to treat students who are a part of the LGBTQIA community. She and her brother, Griffen Jennings, have created the Be Kind bill.

Jazz and Griffen Jennings sit down with the Secretary of Education to discuss the bill. Dr. Miguel Cardona is the one who sets the policies for education in the United States. So, talking to him about the bill is an important step towards passing it.

TLC Star Faces Bullying by Students and also Teachers in School

Jazz Jennings tells Dr. Miguel Cardona that she dealt with a lot of bullying in elementary school. She explains that it wasn’t just by the students but also by teachers. And Jazz wasn’t allowed to use the girls’ restroom. She had to use the nurse’s restroom. But she didn’t like using it because it was dirty and out of the way.

As the I Am Jazz reality star got older, she was told she had “cooties.” Kids wouldn’t sit near her at lunch. They would also call her names. It was tough for her to experience that treatment from the people around her at school. She wants people to live in a world where they can be “free to be who they are.”

The Secretary of Education, Dr. Miguel Cardona, agrees with Jazz. He also believes that it “shouldn’t be debatable in 2021.” He asks her what she would like to see for schools in the US. Now that they are opening up again after closing due to the pandemic. She feels that every school should have a program in place that educates admins and teachers. And it should focus on “how to treat kids with respect.”

Dr. Miguel Cardona tells the I Am Jazz castmate that they make sure that schools are “welcoming environments.” So, he wants her to know that she has allies at the Department of Education. But he suggests that Griffen continues to advocate at Jazz’s side. And he encourages them to have conversations with policymakers.

Jazz Wants to Create Change

Jazz Jennings feels good after speaking with the Secretary of Education. She believes working with Griffen, they laid the foundation for something meaningful. To know that someone in the President’s cabinet is willing to listen is exciting. Also, to know they want to understand and create change is “amazing” to her. However, she knows that it will take a lot of work to move this bill forward.

Griffen Jennings from I Am Jazz suggests that they try to speak to a congressman or legislator. They need to see if they can “start drafting some concepts.” But will Jazz and her brother be able to make schools a more welcoming place for every child?
