Babs Thore Suffers Stroke & Cardiac Event on My Big Fat Fabulous Life

On the season premiere of MBFFL, Hunter Thore relays the story of finding Babs Thore collapsed at their home. He said he’d gone to get her lunch, and when he got back an hour later, he found his mother unresponsive on the sofa.

It turns out that she had a stroke as revealed on the episode named for her “For the Love of Babs”. Whitney’s, of course, heartbroken to hear her mom is in such bad shape. And then things get worse for the Thore family.

MBFFL: Babs Thore - Glenn Thore

Hunter, Babs, and Glenn Thore all tested positive for COVID-19. That sent Glenn and Hunter into quarantine, so neither can visit Babs in the hospital. Fortunately, Whitney tested negative, so at least she can visit her mom in the hospital.

But she’s wrecked when she gets worse news about her mom on My Big Fat Fabulous Life. In the preview for the rest of the season, it’s clear that Mrs. Thore’s health will be an ongoing concern.

This isn’t Babs Thore’s first stroke. She had one five years ago. But throughout the last two years, when coronavirus ran rampant, the Thore family stuck to quarantines and strict protocols.

With her parents being elderly and Whitney so heavy, they are all at high risk for COVID complications. The Season 10 promo shows the Thores getting word that her mother also had a cardiac event.

But that’s not what sends Whitney into a fit of sobbing on MBFFL S10 E1. Instead, they tell her that Babs isn’t responding well. She’s not eating, and they’ve had to insert a feeding tube.

Plus, they’re told on My Big Fat Fabulous Life that she has a urinary tract infection. That might sound like no big deal, but in an older person, it can be debilitating. So, it’s just a perfect storm of bad news.

Did Babs Thore Die on My Big Fat Fabulous Life?

As the first episode ends, Whitney gets bad news from Babs’ doctors. Because her mother’s not responding and won’t eat, the doctors take away the option of her going to a rehabilitation facility.

Step-down rehab is the standard treatment for an older person recovering from a stroke or other serious medical event. Instead, they tell Whitney that Babs can go to a palliative care facility.

What does that mean? It’s basically where they’d take Babs and keep her comfortable until she died. Whit’s so distraught by the end of the episode that one of the producers has to drive her mom.

She says that they talked to her about removing her mom’s feeding tube and essentially letting her starve to death. So, did Babs Thore die? The first episode makes it look dire and leaves us hanging.

Thankfully, Babs recovered and made it back home to Glenn, Whitney, and Hunter. In fact, she and Glenn just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.
