Swamp People on Season 13 and Counting — How Many Cast Members Died?

The History Channel first brought the descendants of the French Canadian refugees to the small screen on August 22, 2010. It follows tough people of the bayous of Louisiana as they participate in the annual 30-day alligator hunting season.

Gator season launches each year on the first Wednesday of September. The original Swamp People of Season 1 included:

  • Bruce Mitchell
  • Jacob Landry
  • Clint & Troy Landry
  • Junior, Willie, & Randy Edwards
  • Kentwood, Albert & Anthony Knight
  • Joe LaFont
  • Malcom McQuiston
  • Mike & T-Mike Kliebert
  • Tommy Chauvin

But not all of the Season 1 cast members survived. And another from Season 2 passed away as well. Plus, a surprising fan-fave cast member lost their life as well. So, see who was lost from the cast.

Swamp People Star Mitchell Guist Dead at Age 48

Mitchell Guist was part of the second and third seasons of the History Channel show that follows alligator hunting season in the Atchafalaya River Basin in Louisiana. And his older brother Glenn Guist appeared on the show as well.

Mitchell and an unidentified second person were working on his boat when he had a seizure. He fell backward into the boat. They were about 75 miles out of New Orleans on the Belle River.

That person, who asked not to be named, got the boat to the landing, started CPR, and called Mitchell’s wife Janet Kliebert. So, she alerted 911 and he was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City.

There, he was pronounced dead. Sheriff Mike Waguespack of Assumption Parish released the autopsy report just a few days after Mitchell passed. He said it was “natural causes”. Mitchell Guist died on May 14, 2012.

The executive producer of Swamp People, Brian Catalina, said that with his passing they “lost a really important part of our family”. And he called Mitchell Guist a “treasured friend”. He appeared in Seasons 1 and 2 of the History Channel series.

But after losing his brother, Glenn continued with Swamp People for several more seasons, last seen in Season 11 in 2020.

History Channel’s Randy Edwards Passed Away at Age 35

Another tragic loss from the cast of Swamp People came several years after Guist passed on. The next to die from the gator hunting show was Randy Edwards. Unlike Guist, Edwards did not die on the river.

Instead, he lost his life in a car accident. When fans met Randy, he lived on Bayou Sorrell and was on Season 1 and then Seasons 3-6. His father, Junior Edwards, and his mother, Theresa Edwards. Also, his brother Willie was part of the series.

On September 15, 2018, at 3 am, Randy Edwards lost control of his car and crashed his Chevy Silverado into a utility pole. He died in Iberville, LA. So, one of his cousins shared the news with the public later that day.

EMTs pronounced him dead on the scene. The crash was so extreme that it threw Randy from his vehicle. And reports indicate police conducted a toxicology screening.

But the Louisiana State Police didn’t release the results. Edwards was reportedly part of several cast layoffs that came after Season 6 of Swamp People. To date, the show is still on the air, though.

Tyler from Swamp People Died of Congestive Heart Failure

Another star from the series that passed away was a four-legged cast member. Bruce Mitchell’s beloved hound Tyler died in 2014. Known as “the Swamp Dog”, Tyler was often spotted on Bruce’s boat.

He called the pooch his “best friend” and said Tyler enjoyed fishing and hunting gators. Bruce began taking his dog out on the boat from the age of four months. And he said when he goes out, the dog insists on coming along.

But, Bruce Mitchell’s still part of the Swamp People cast. Unfortunately, fan-favorite Tyler the dog passed over the rainbow bridge at age 13 on April 28, 2014. Then, Bruce’s, wife Janet Mitchell, revealed their dog had congestive heart failure.

So, Tyler lived with the condition for three years before he died. And the Mitchells buried the Zebra Cake-loving pooch on the family property. It was a loss for them and History channel fans.
