‘General Hospital’: 5 Things Sonny & Nina Have in Common
General Hospital legacy mobster Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and town pariah Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) have quite a bit in common if you think about it. So, Nina and back-from-the-dead Sonny could very well become the newest power couple on GH. Indeed, that seems to be the direction things are going on the ABC sudser. So now, check out five things Sonny has in common with his former love Nina.
#1 Sonny Corinthos & Nina Reeves both Struggled with Mental Illness on General Hospital
GH fans know Sonny Corinthos suffers from bipolar disorder and was diagnosed in 2006. Viewers may recall that Sonny suffered tremendously before being put on lithium.
Thankfully, Sonny got his bipolar under control and manages well. But he was devastated when he learned that he passed the disorder to his son Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig). Sonny carried a lot of guilt for giving the disease to Morgan even though it was just down to genetics.
And when Morgan “died” in a car explosion, Sonny’s mental health took a hit, recall General Hospital recaps. The mobster fell into a deep depression and became suicidal. Unfortunately, mental illness is something Nina Reeves understands all too well.

The General Hospital fan base might recall Nina Reeves languished in a coma for 23 years. Nina’s mother, Madeline Reeves (Donna Mills), injected her with an overdose of antidepressants, putting her into a long-term catatonic state. When Nina woke up, she struggled to get her old life back on GH.
But when she realized that wasn’t possible, she started to lose her grip on reality. Nina had a breakdown when she learned that she could never have children. So, Nina Reeves drugged pregnant Ava Jerome (Maura West) and stole her baby. Eventually, Nina got her life on track and became mentally stable again on General Hospital.
Even though she recently hid Sonny from his family, she didn’t do it because of a mental breakdown. Nina Reeves is truly in love with Sonny, reminds Soap Dirt. Perhaps, she could be good for Sonny because she understands what it’s like to have a mental disorder and won’t judge him.
#2 Nina & Sonny’s Bad Reputations on GH
Another thing Sonny Corinthos and his former flame Nina share on General Hospital are their bad reps. Indeed, Sonny Corinthos is the Teflon Don of Port Chuck and has been for decades. Sonny is known as the mobster with a heart of gold because he loves his family so much.
Even though Sonny is “allegedly” involved in illegal activity, he is a loving and devoted husband and father. Sonny Corinthos will do anything for his family and others that he cares about. So although he can be ruthless, when necessary, Sonny is fiercely loyal.
But many people only see him as a criminal. Of course, Nina Reeves has a bad rep also for what she did to Ava in the past. And now, after hiding the fact that Sonny Corinthos was alive, many people in town will never forgive her. And Nina may be defined by that mistake forever.
But, as much as he tries to hide it, Sonny Corinthos understands and likely forgives Nina. He knows she loves him and was afraid to lose him. The mobster still loves Nina also even though he can’t admit it right now. And soon, they may get another chance at love on General Hospital.
#3 Both Suffered the Tragic Loss of a Child on General Hospital
GH outcast Nina Reeves also knows what it is like to lose a child, just like Sonny Corinthos does. Unfortunately, Sonny lost his son Morgan. And Nina’s daughter Nelle Hayes (Chloe Lanier) is dead also. However, Nelle is a villainess, and they rarely stay dead on GH. So, there’s always a chance she’ll come back.

But, for now, Nina still grieves for the daughter she never got a chance to raise. Plus, she still carries guilt for turning on Nelle during the custody battle for Wiley Corinthos (Caleb and Kyler Ends). Nina feels that if she had helped Nelle, things could have turned out differently on General Hospital.
And Nelle might still be alive. No doubt, Sonny Corinthos also harbors guilt. And he thinks Morgan would still be alive if Sonny made different choices. So, the grief is yet another thing that connects Nina Reeves to Sonny on General Hospital.
#4 Sketchy & Painful Childhoods on GH
Long-time GH watchers will recall Sonny Corinthos had a hard childhood. His late father, Mike Corbin (Max Gail), wasn’t around due to gambling addiction. So, his mother, Adela Corbin (Iris Almario), left him and later remarried a cop, Deke Woods.
Deke seemed like a good guy on the outside. But, behind closed doors, he severely beat Sonny and his mother, Adela. And he used to lock Sonny in the closet for long periods of time. Then, one day, he beat Adela so badly that she died. Deke’s friends on the police force covered up his crimes.
So, Sonny had a bad view of the law. And that’s when he turned to the mob life. As for Nina, her mother, Madeline, only cared about money and was never a good mother to Nina. Then, she tried to make Nina miscarry her baby, which resulted in Nina’s 23-year coma.
To make matters worse, Nina Reeves delivered the baby, and Madeline gave her away on the black market. So, clearly, Nina and the kingpin can relate to each other. And their tough pasts made them who they are on General Hospital.
#5 Loss of Family Members on GH
Nina Reeves shares another tragedy with Sonny Corinthos – the death of a close family member. GH recaps remind that Sonny’s dad, Mike died of Alzheimer’s not too long ago.
Nina’s mom, Madeline, died as well, but that isn’t the family death that shook her. Instead, the untimely death of her brother, Nathan West (Ryan Paevey), destroyed Nina, remind General Hospital recaps.
Nina Reeves was extremely close to Nathan, and she feels his absence every day. And, of course, Sonny Corinthos misses Mike terribly. Yet another thing for them to bond over.
