Who Died on ‘Yellowstone’?

Who died on Yellowstone? The Paramount series delivered many stunning and violent deaths to characters over its four seasons. Including a tense cliffhanger where Dutton family lives hung in the balance.

We are on mid-way through season 5, So, here’s a look at who’s lost their life in the first four seasons.

Who died on Yellowstone? Was Roarke Morris the Best Death?

In an exit that shocked viewers, Josh Holloway’s character, Roarke Morris, went out like the snake he was.

Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) flung a diamondback rattler at the avid fly-fisherman. It bit hard and Roarke went down.

Plus, Rip held Roarke down with a boot to ensure he met his maker in Season 4, Episode 1. It was a fun, fitting, if disturbing end to Roarke. That rattlesnake took him out fast and furious.

Other Season 4 Deaths on Paramount Series – Punishment for Dutton Plot

Harkening back to the Yellowstone Season 3 plot to kill the Duttons, vengeance came calling. We saw Chester Spears, AKA Checkers (Brad Carter), in and out in a few episodes.

He was a key part of the Dutton assassination scheme. He went out at John Dutton‘s (Kevin Costner) hand during a shootout. The Dutton patriarch gave him a fighting chance and said “This is about as even as it’s gonna get”.  In the end, Checkers bleeding corpse was left at the “train station”.

Then, in Season 4 Episode 2, the Militia, aka Checker’s thugs, were taken out as well. Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), Rip, and Lloyd Pierce (Forrie J. Smith) took out the trash. These bad dudes weren’t named but are remembered as the ones who tried to kill the family.

Sheriff Donnie Haskell is Killed

Then, in Season 4, Episode 8, Sheriff Donnie Haskell (Hugh Dillon) died in a shootout at the diner.

That happened when Rip and John interrupted a robbery on Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner’s Close Friend Dies on ‘Yellowstone’

And in the Season 4 finale, we saw the fate of creepy Garrett Randall (Will Patton). His biological son, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), shot him.

The actor, Will Patton, is a friend of Kevin Costner’s and the two have worked together on films like The Postman and No Way Out.

As it turned out, he was the figure behind the assassination plot against the Duttons. Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) told her adopted brother Jamie Jamie to prove himself to the family. Kill your bio-dad or we kill you! Jamie took out the villain with a head shot.

Season 3 Deaths on Yellowstone – Morrow Men Meet their Makers

Since its premiere, Yellowstone has been a show with an ongoing undercurrent of violence. Season 3 was no exception. In Season 3 Episode 9, Wade Morrow (Boots Sutherland) faced justice for his actions.

Yellowstone: Wade Morrow - Boots Sutherland

You may recall that his men injured Colby (Denim Richards) and Teeter (Jen Landon) in the prior episode. Then, a posse of ranchers came for the creep.

Rip, Colby, Teeter (Jennifer Landson), and other ranchers ambushed Wade and lassoed him off his horse. They strung him up to a tree and that’s how he went out.

Plus, they had Walker (Ryan Bingham) burn the Y brand off Wade’s chest while still alive… to prove Walker’s loyalty to the Duttons. As Yellowstone viewers saw, He did it.

And Wade’s son, Clint Morrow (Brent Walker), was taken out right before his dad was. During a horseback chase, a tree branch knocked Clint off his horse during the ambush. His skull was bashed on a rock, killing him.

Who Died in Season 2? A Brutal Season Finale

The closing episode of Season 2 might have been the most brutal on the Paramount Western series. Paradise Valley rival of John Dutton, Dan Jenkins (Danny Huston), faced his fate.

Mercenaries hired by the Becks took out Jenkins. In the raid on Dan’s compound, mercs shot his henchman/security guard Torry (Wolle Parks) dead on Yellowstone.

It was the Becks that organized the raid but it didn’t work out so well for them in the end.

Dan Jenkins wasn’t the only carpet bagger to get eliminated.  Brothers Teal and Malcolm Beck also lost their lives on the season 2 finale. The brothers were trying to take over land on or near the Yellowstone ranch, and things didn’t go as planned.

You may recall that the Teal brothers were the one responsible for Beth’s attack and torture and Tate Dutton’s (Brecken Merrill) kidnapping. Things went bad for the Becks after Kayce found out Teal was one of those behind the attacks.

Kayce shot Teal Beck (Terry Serpico) while the guy was on the toilet. Two to the chest and one to the leg. The cops decided it looked like a shoot-out. Also, Beck’s goons killed Beth’s assistant Jason (David Cleveland Brown) after they invaded her office and assaulted them.

Teal’s brother, Malcolm Beck was also killed on the season finale.

Also in Yellowstone Season 2, Episode 6, Jamie strangled reporter Sarah Ngyuen (Michaela Conlin). He blabbed Dutton secrets to her but then had second thoughts. When she wouldn’t relent on publishing the dirt, John’s son snapped and choked her to death.

And don’t forget the S2 E4 death of Dirk Hurdstram (Stanley Peternel). He’s the granddad of Jimmy Hurdstram (Jefferson White). Remember, meth dealers Ray and Blake beat Dirk to death as a warning to Jimmy.

Who Died in Season 1 of Yellowstone?

Both Kayce Dutton and his wife Monica Long-Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) both lost brothers in the inaugural season of the Western on Paramount. Kayce’s brother was killed first.

In Episode 1 of Yellowstone, Lee Dutton (Dave Annable) led a raid on the Broken Rock Reservation. He died in what some consider to be the most tragic death to date.

Kayce’s trigger-happy brother-in-law Robert Long (Jeremiah Butsui) shot Lee in the neck. Kayce avenged his brother Lee by shooting Robert in the body and then the head to make sure it was done.

In the fallout from the Res raid gone wrong, Robert’s widow, Samantha Long (MorningStar Angeline), killed herself. And by Episode 4, Lloyd killed Dutton ranch hand Fred Myers (Luke Peckinpah) at the train station after he ran his mouth too much.

So far, the series shows the violent side of ranchers and land grabs among the powerful fictional families in Montana.
