Where was Seinfeld Filmed?

Where was Seinfeld filmed? Although the iconic must-see NBC series ended in 1998 after a near-decade run, it remains popular. It still airs weekly on cable TV and a legion of fans still quote the timeless quips. But where did it film? Was it in New York or not?

Where is Jerry Seinfeld’s Apartment?

Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment was a key set for the NBC show. On Seinfeld, Jerry and Cosmo Kramer live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It’s near Riverside Park, Juilliard, and the New York Historical Society.

His given address is 129 West 81st Street. Jerry Seinfeld lives in apartment 5A and Kramer lives across the hall in 5B. The interior was on a sound stage. But the exterior? It’s not in New York City, surprisingly. In fact, it’s not even in New York State.

where is Jerry Seinfelds apartment

It’s all the way across the country. The exterior shot of Jerry’s place is from a California apartment building. So, where was Seinfeld filmed? At least when it comes to Jerry Seinfeld’s pad, it was mostly interiors at a studio with the one-shot from LA too.

Where Was Seinfeld Filmed — Tom’s Restaurant is in?

Unlike Jerry’s place, the iconic diner where he, Elaine Benes, George Constanza, and Kramer often ate, is in NYC. It’s in the Morningside Heights area of Manhattan. If Jerry and his pals walked there, it’d be a two-mile stroll.

They could hop on the Hudson Line of the subway or take a 40-minute walk to get there. The exteriors filmed there, but the interior shots did not for many reasons. First, it’s a real diner that wouldn’t shut down to film a sitcom.

Second, Tom’s diner is really small inside and cramped. It has more of a feel of a Waffle House than the set they built at CBS Studio Center. But if you’re ever in Manhattan, definitely go check it out. They have pics and Seinfeld memorabilia (some for sale).

Is the Soup Nazi’s Place Real?

Like Tom’s, the soup place is also real. Although Seinfeld got away with it, these days you can’t call an immigrant a “Nazi” for any reason. The Soup Man restaurant was located at West 55th in Midtown.

Al Yaganeh ran the legendary soup establishment. He’s an Armenian immigrant from Iran who was allegedly an infamous tyrant (in real life). He was strict about how his customers acted in his shop. His motto was “the customer is always wrong”. And he’s right.

Reportedly, he wasn’t happy to be lampooned on the show. He kicked Jerry Seinfeld out of his shop before demanding (and not really getting) an apology. Yaganeh said the show “ruined” his business.

Another iconic film also called out The Soup Man. In Sleepless in Seattle. A character in the movie said it’s “the greatest soup” served by “the meanest man in America”. Years later, the soup establishment fell into decline and closed.

Where was Seinfeld filmed? NBC filmed it in front of a live audience. Yet they still added a laugh track. They taped in Studio City on the CBS lot. And production filmed also at the Brownstone Street on the backlot at Universal Studios.

Where to watch Seinfeld? You can watch all nine seasons on Netflix. Plus, episodes air live on Comedy Central and some local affiliates.
