How much did Ken Jennings win on Jeopardy is a common fan question since he alludes to it often while hosting the game show.
Ken Jennings remains a record-holder, despite other competitors trying hard to take him down.
How Much Money Did Ken Jennings win on Jeopardy?
When looking at who has won the most money on Jeopardy, one to look at is Ken Jennings. Before his fame on the long-running ABC trivia show, Ken was a software engineer from Utah.
Ken was born in the Seattle, Washington metro area on May 23, 1974. Since his father was an international lawyer, the game show phenom spent part of his childhood abroad in Singapore and South Korea.
According to his own website, Jennings started college at the University of Washington but left to do a two-year required missionary stint since he’s a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
After that, Ken transferred to the Mormon college, Brigham Young University. He joined BYU’s quiz bowl team, the perfect training ground for someone who emerged as one of the top three Jeopardy winners.
He graduated in 2000 with a double major in computer science and English. Four years later, he’d start his record-breaking run on the quiz show. The year before he was cast on the show, they scrapped the five-game maximum win rule.
That was great news for the incoming champ who started his run in Season 20 on June 2, 2004. In regular season play, Ken Jennings won 74 Jeopardy games. His last appearance in a standard season was November 30, 2004.
Ken Jennings’ net worth increased by $2,522,700 as he ended his run. But there was more cash to come from the Tournament of Champions on the Sony-produced show.
Who Beat Ken Jennings on Jeopardy!
While hosting the show, he often alludes to his past as a competitor but how long was Ken Jennings on Jeopardy? He had 74 regular season episodes that spanned 182 calendar days.
There were weekends with no episodes and pauses for the Kids Week, Tournament of Champions, College Championship, and preemptions for election coverage.
Another competitor beat Ken Jennings on Jeopardy in his 75th game. But who was it and how did he lose? In his last game, he played against Nancy Zerg, a Ventura, California realtor and college student David Hankins from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Unfortunately for David, he was in the negative at -$2,800. She, he couldn’t play the final round. The score was Nancy Zxerg $10,000 and Ken Jennings $14,400 going into Final Jeopardy. The category was Business & Industry.
The answer that took down Ken Jennings was “Most of this firm’s 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only 4 months a year.” Ken’s question was “what is FedEx?” which was incorrect. Nancy correctly answered, “What is H&R Block”.
Jenning’s had bet $5,601, taking him down to $8,799. Nancy Zerg bet $4,401, taking her to $14,401, defeating him by $5,602. A stunned Nancy later said it wasn’t until several hours later that she also realized she’d won $14k.
The big feather in her cap was taking down a Jeopardy titan. But that wasn’t the end of Ken Jennings’ time on the quiz show. He still got to play as a champion.
Who Else is in the Top 3 on the ABC Quiz Show?
The top three competitors of all time (in number of games) are:
- #1 Ken Jennings $2,522,700 in 74 games
- #2 Amy Schneider $1,382,800 in 40 games
- #3 Matt Amodio $1,518,601 in 38 games
Ken Jennings also played the Jeopardy! Ultimate Tournament of Champions in 2005, placing second to Brad Rutter. That event began with 145 competitors and ran 15 weeks. But Ken appeared only in the last three episodes as he had a buy to the final round.
There, he played against Brad Rutter and Jerome Vered. Brad bested him in all three rounds. Ken took home the $ 500,000-second place prize. Next, in 2011, Ken and Brad faced off against IBM’s Watson computer in Jeopardy’s IBM Challenge.
The computer beat them both but it was still a milestone for Ken because it was the first time he’d ever beaten Brad. The latter came in third in this special exhibition match. Ken pledged half of his $300k second-place winning to charity.
He played again in the Battle of the Decades in 2014. That ended with his team placing second to Rutter’s and him garnering another $100k of game show cash. The last time he faced off with his toughest competitor came in 2020.
That was Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time. It was Ken Jennings vs Brad Rutter vs James Holzhauer (the highest regular-season earner of all time at $2.46m). They played four rounds with Jennings besting his competitors in three of four making him the G.O.A.T.
In total, how many Jeopardy games did Ken Jennings win? That’s a big more convoluted to calculate. He triumphed in 74 regular season matches. three in the decade battle, none in the IBM or ultimate tournament, and three in the GOAT totaling 80 wins.
(But it’s complicated by team matches, so this is an estimate.)

But, Richards was canceled over objectionable comments on a podcast. The made him step down as host. But, the firestorm continued until Sony fired him as executive producer as well.
Richards hosted five episodes before a firestorm erupted.
Then, Mayim Bialik was announced as “the host”, and Ken was as announced as “hosting”.

It’s doubtful that Ken or Mayim earns that much. Neither Sony nor Ken Jennings has revealed his payday info.
