‘Young and the Restless’ Ratings Suck – 5 Ways to Save ‘Y&R’

Young and the Restless ratings are in and they suck. Many fans find the show boring as heck right now. With months away from shooting, they had time to fine-tune scripts. So, we have to wonder if Josh Griffith and the writing gang was binging Tiger King and doing paint by numbers instead.

Young and the Restless Ratings Plummet – 1.3+ Million Viewers Lost

After more than four months of classic re-runs, you’d expect fans would be back in droves for new Y&R episodes. In the first new episodes, we got hotel wars, confirmation that Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) accidentally killed a guy as a kid, and Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) as CEO.

These are either things that Young and the Restless fans already knew or frankly didn’t give a damn about, for the most part. That’s why they lost nearly 1.4 million viewers week over week. How do they bring back fresh episodes yet disenchant so many watchers?

The ratings aren’t in yet for the subsequent week of new Young and the Restless episodes, but based on fan comments on social media, it doesn’t look promising. With all that time to chart out strong new plotlines, it looks like the CBS soap writers flopped. Here are five ways to fix it.

Young and the Restless: Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) - Victor Newman (Eric Braeden)

#1 Drop the Adam Killer Kid Plot on Y&R

Young and the Restless keeps giving us Adam and this childhood killer angst. Granted, Mark Grossman’s talented and it’s great to see him with material that’ll look good on his Emmy reel. But, no one cares that Adam shoved some a-hole to his doom in Kansas a million years ago.

They don’t and pushing more of it in viewers’ faces on Young and the Restless won’t make them care. And so what if Vicki blabs? No one will prosecute Adam for it – so even the law won’t care. Drop the plot and put Adam back at Dark Horse, making his big sister’s life miserable. Done.

#2 Leave the Dinosaur Bones in the Jurassic Era on Young and the Restless

And just when you think Y&R couldn’t get dumber, they deliver a box of dinosaur bones. First, you can’t just buy dino bones of any size online easily. Second, a paleontologist would immediately know they’re a set-up because they’d be museum-quality clean and not dig-site dirty. Duh.

Does Young and the Restless think fans are dumb? They’re not. And they’re tuning out. Why not let Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) and Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway) fight over Chance Chancellor (Donny Boaz) and stop the horrid hotel plots? Maybe Y&R uses Courtney Hope wisely now that they cast her…

#3 Do Less Boardroom Business – More Bedroom Business on Y&R

Young and the Restless is a business-centric show as GH revolves around the hospital and B&B around the fashion house. But that doesn’t mean we need to sit at business meetings and watch the ink dry on contracts. Yawn. Offices are great places for affairs, secrets, and lies.

Bring back Judith Chapman as Gloria Abbott on Young and the Restless and watch sparks fly. She’s excellent at corporate intrigue and could be a welcome addition at Jabot to keep an eye on the younger generation for Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). And maybe pair her with Jack again.

#4 Introduce a Villain on Young and the Restless – Maybe Ian Ward?

One glaring weakness on Y&R right now is the lack of meaningful conflict. The best plots demand a bad guy. There are no true villains in Genoa City right now. So, bring one back. Take your pick. How about cult guru Ian Ward (Ray Wise) to torment the locals. Let him burn down things again.

If not Ian, how about wicked Marco Annicelli on Young and the Restless? He was a great villain, and they could say he got that lopped off ear reconstructed, so he’s a whole man again. Why not let Marco come back to torment Phyllis, Jack, and get payback on Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) too?

#5 Bring Victor Newman Out of Retirement on Y&R

Young and the Restless is wasting legacy character Victor as well. They’ve made him a prop in this lackluster Adam-kid murder plot that few enjoy. And by retiring Victor from Newman, they filed down his teeth. So, why not sharpen them up again and put him at Dark Horse with Adam?

Now, Victor’s mad on Young and the Restless that Victoria’s chopping up his company. So, why not reclaim his mojo and teach her a lesson by pairing with Adam. That way, she can have the CEO seat, but not her father’s approval – which is what she really wants in the end on the CBS soap.

Will Y&R change things up and save itself – or continue this concerning spiral? We just shared some big casting leaks about Danny Romalotti and Drucilla Winters, but it’ll take more than those changes to stop the ratings drop.
