‘Sister Wives’: Kody Brown Desperate to Squash the ‘Marrying Guy’

Sister Wives star Kody Brown worried about his reputation when exploring unfamiliar ground and took a chance with his family. He had several concerns about where he’d end up once Sister Wives began airing on TLC. But he probably didn’t expect what happened.

Sister Wives: Kody Brown Makes Gallant Decision

Kody Brown explored potential problems before filming to be proactive. He thought he planned it all out, so he looked forward to this first of its kind reality show. But TLC’s concept for their new series launch didn’t coincide with Kody Brown’s vision. So they started with polarized approaches.

When TLC agreed to film Sister Wives, they wanted to debut with Kody marrying fourth wife, Robyn Brown. According to what Brown spouses penned in a book, that didn’t fly with Kody or his bride-to-be. Still, Kody and Robyn’s courtship and nuptials are what most people remember from the first season of Sister Wives.

Kody tells the story of how he insisted the Sister Wives series launch with a focus on his first three wives as well as wife-to-be Robyn. Also, Robyn said she was against monopolizing the debut of their show with her wedding.

Robyn offered some humbling words. She said she felt Meri Brown, Christine Brown, and Janelle Brown shouldn’t take a backseat to her entering into the Sister Wives family.

Instead, Kody Brown wanted the introduction of his family the way it was at the time. Then, after some family-centric episodes played out, the wedding graced the screen.

Kody Brown’s concern for his other three wives sounded gallant at the time. But that wasn’t his only worry. It seems Robyn didn’t want to lessen the significance of his three original wives by taking the spotlight.

Robyn worried about doing a huge disservice to Kody’s first three wives if everything focused on her. While this concerned their shared husband too, he also worried how he would look to Sister Wives viewers. He said he didn’t want to be known as “the marrying guy.”

After all, Sister Wives is not a program about a guy collecting wives. Kody wanted to demonstrate how love can flourish within a plural marriage. He also wanted to show how normal everything is for the kids and household even though he had at the time three wives and prepared to wed his fourth.

All Spouses Quickly Assigned Roles By Fans

Veteran Sister Wives watchers know all too well how the audience saw the three initial wives as victims. Christine was pregnant with Truely as Robyn entered the family. The third wife was in tears as Kody’s attention seemed fixated on Robyn.

Plus, Meri and Janelle weren’t comfortable with Kody’s behavior, either. That left him looking unkind and Robyn like a homewrecker. Robyn herself said the fans saw her as the new wife ready to take over Kody and ruin existing relationships.

While that mindset waned since the early days of Sister Wives, Robyn still hears it today. As for Kody, the least of his worries was the possible nickname. “Marrying Guy” is nicer than a lot of the other things fans called Kody Brown over the years.
